How to Make a Private MAX Channel Public and Vice Versa
Learn how to change a MAX channel type: convert a private channel to public through settings or MAX for Business, switch a public channel to private, and understand what happens to the username, link, search visibility, subscribers, posts, and join requests.
Yes. A private MAX channel can now be made public without creating a new channel, and a public channel can be switched back to private. The type is changed in the existing channel settings. For the standard private-to-public route, the owner needs Digital ID, an available slot under the public-channel limit, and MAX on Android, desktop, or web. Verified businesses also have a second route through @business_channel_bot.
The reverse switch is easier: the owner can make any public channel private, including A+ and business channels. But there is one critical consequence: the public username is released, so another user may claim it. A private channel is no longer discoverable by non-subscribers in search and uses an invite link instead.
Can You Convert a Private MAX Channel to Public Now?
Yes.
This is an important MAX update. Older search results still say:
A private MAX channel cannot be converted; you must create a separate public channel.
That is now outdated.
Current official MAX documentation explicitly describes changing the type of an existing channel.
If your private channel already has content and an audience, you no longer need to abandon it and rebuild from zero just to become public.
For business channels, the official MAX for Business channel explicitly confirms that subscribers and posts stay in place during the private-to-public conversion.
What Changes When the Channel Becomes Public?
A public MAX channel:
- · Can be found through MAX search;
- · Has a public username;
- · Has a public link;
- · Can be joined by any user;
- · No longer needs approval of join requests;
- · Is easier to use in advertising and external promotion.
MAX says public channels can be found by username, link, name, and description.
If discovery is the goal, optimize the name, description, and username after conversion. See how to appear in MAX search.
What Do You Need for the Standard Private-to-Public Conversion?
There are four key conditions.
1. You Must Be the Owner
A normal administrator cannot change the channel type.
2. You Need Digital ID
The standard settings route requires MAX Digital ID.
If you do not have it yet, MAX prompts you to create it.
See Digital ID in MAX.
3. You Need a Free Public-Channel Slot
For user-created channel_{username} channels, MAX currently applies a combined limit of up to five public channels.
Other public channels you own can count toward that limit, including A+ and channels created through the partner/business flow.
If you already have five, you can:
- · Delete one;
- · Transfer ownership;
- · Make one public channel private.
4. Use a Supported Platform
Current official documentation supports type changes on:
- · Android;
- · Desktop;
- · MAX web.
The native iOS app may not expose this control. On iPhone, use the current MAX web version when needed.
How to Make a Private MAX Channel Public Through Settings
If Digital ID already exists:
- Open MAX.
- Open the private channel.
- Tap the channel avatar next to its name.
- Open settings using the pencil or ⚙️.
- Open Channel type and link.
- Select Public.
- Confirm the change.
- Enter a new username in the link field.
- Wait for availability validation.
- If it is free, tap Save.
The channel is now public.
What Username Can You Choose?
This route uses the format:
channel_{your_username}
For example:
channel_example
MAX checks availability before saving.
What if You Do Not Have Digital ID Yet?
MAX includes Digital ID creation in the conversion flow.
On Android
When you choose the public type, MAX can take you into Digital ID setup.
Complete the identity flow, return to the channel, and repeat the type-change steps.
On Desktop or Web
MAX can show a QR code that sends you to Digital ID setup on your phone.
Digital ID itself is issued in the mobile app.
After setup:
- Return to the channel.
- Open Channel type and link again.
- Select Public.
- Set the username.
- Save.
Can You Make the Channel Public Without Digital ID?
Not through the normal user settings route.
There is, however, a separate business route.
An owner with a verified profile for a:
- · Legal entity;
- · Sole proprietor;
- · Self-employed business;
can use the official MAX for Business Channels bot:
@business_channel_bot
How to Convert a Private Channel Through MAX for Business
Requirements:
- · You are the channel owner;
- · The organization / sole proprietor / self-employed profile is verified;
- · You own at least one private channel;
- · Your public-channel limit allows the conversion.
Steps:
- Open
@business_channel_bot. - Tap Start.
- Choose Make channel public.
- Select the private channel.
- Enter a
channel_{your_username}username. - Wait for confirmation.
You may also be able to enter the flow from:
Channel type and link → Public for Business
See MAX for Business for the broader business setup.
Do Subscribers and Posts Stay?
For the business conversion flow, official MAX for Business explicitly says subscribers and publications remain in place.
This is one of the biggest advantages over the older “create another channel and migrate everyone” workaround.
The type changes on the existing channel.
Do Existing Subscribers Need to Join Again?
No, when you are changing the type of the existing channel.
For future promotion, however, use the new public link.
If the old private invite link was published on websites, Telegram, emails, or QR codes, replace it with the new public URL.
What Happens to Join Requests After the Channel Becomes Public?
They are no longer required.
A public MAX channel can be joined directly by any user.
If you need approval before access, keep the channel private and use join requests.
How to Make a Public MAX Channel Private
The reverse process is simpler.
MAX allows any public channel to become private, including:
- · Normal public channels;
- · A+ channels;
- · Business channels;
- · Channels created through MAX for Partners;
- · Channels created through
@business_channel_bot.
Only the owner can change the type.
The option is available on Android, desktop, and web.
Step by Step: Public → Private
- Open MAX.
- Open the public channel.
- Tap the channel avatar.
- Open settings using the pencil or ⚙️.
- Open Channel type and link.
- Select Private.
- Tap Save.
The channel is now private.
What Happens to the Public Username?
This is the most important consequence.
When a public channel becomes private, its public username is released.
Another MAX user may claim it.
Example:
max.ru/channel_example
After the channel becomes private, MAX no longer reserves channel_example for that channel.
Can You Get the Old Username Back Later?
Only if it is still available.
MAX does not promise to reserve the old public username.
This matters especially for:
- · Brands;
- · Media;
- · Creators with recognizable names;
- · A+ channels;
- · Businesses that already printed or advertised the URL.
If the username is valuable, do not make the channel private casually.
What Happens to an A+ Channel if It Becomes Private?
MAX explicitly allows A+ channels to become private.
After the switch:
- · The public username disappears;
- · The old username is released;
- · Non-subscribers cannot find the channel through search;
- · Going public again requires a new
channel_{your_username}username.
Official documentation does not promise automatic restoration of the old A+ username.
See A+ in MAX for the A+ workflow.
What Happens to a Business Channel if It Becomes Private?
Business channels can also become private.
The same risks apply:
- · Public username is removed;
- · The old username can be claimed by someone else;
- · Search visibility disappears for non-subscribers;
- · Going public again requires a new
channel_{your_username}.
Do not use “private” as a temporary pause mode if the public URL is part of your brand identity.
What Happens to Search Visibility?
A private MAX channel cannot be found by non-subscribers through internal search.
It also has no public username.
Access is based on an invite link.
The acquisition model changes from:
search + public link + direct subscription
to:
invite link → optional approval → access.
If the channel relies on organic discovery, making it private can reduce discoverability.
What Happens to the Link When the Channel Becomes Private?
Private channels use an automatically generated invite link instead of a public username.
After switching:
- Open channel settings.
- Find the invite-link section.
- Copy the current invite link.
- Replace the old public URL wherever it was published.
Do not keep promoting the released username.
Can You Turn on Join Requests?
Yes.
Private MAX channels support Join requests.
The flow becomes:
user opens invite link → submits request → owner/admin approves or rejects → user gets access.
This works well for:
- · Closed communities;
- · Paid access;
- · Customer-only channels;
- · Internal company channels;
- · Manually curated communities.
How to Enable Join Requests After Going Private
- Open the channel.
- Tap the name or avatar.
- Open settings.
- Open Channel type and link.
- Enable Join requests.
- Confirm.
- Share the new invite link.
For growth strategy around closed channels, see how to promote a private MAX channel.
Does Making a Channel Private Free a Public-Channel Slot?
Yes.
MAX explicitly lists switching a public channel to private as one way to reduce the number of public channels you own.
This matters for the standard Digital ID route, which has a combined maximum of five public channels.
When the limit is full, you can:
- · Delete a public channel;
- · Transfer ownership;
- · Make a public channel private.
Then you can make another channel public.
How Many Private MAX Channels Can You Have?
Official MAX documentation says the number of private channels is unlimited.
That is different from several public-channel creation routes.
Can You Switch Back and Forth More Than Once?
MAX supports both directions:
private → public
and
public → private.
The main risk is the username.
- Public channel — username is reserved.
- Make it private — username is released.
- Make it public again — you must choose an available username.
- The old one may already belong to someone else.
So the switch is technically reversible, but it should not be treated as a casual temporary toggle.
Public or Private: When Should You Change the Type?
| Situation | Better Fit |
|---|---|
| You want discovery through search | Public |
| Anyone should be able to subscribe | Public |
| You plan to advertise the channel | Usually public |
| You run a closed club | Private |
| You want to approve new members | Private + join requests |
| The channel is only for employees | Private |
| You sell access to content | Private |
| You reached the public-channel limit | Make one unnecessary public channel private |
| You have a valuable branded username | Be careful before going private |
For the broader comparison, see MAX channels.
Should You Make a Private Channel Public for Promotion?
If the goal is new subscriber acquisition through search and external traffic, the public type is usually easier to promote.
A public channel:
- · Can appear in search;
- · Has a simple public URL;
- · Can be linked from a website;
- · Is easier to use in ads;
- · Does not require manual admission.
But public status alone does not guarantee growth.
You still need strong channel packaging, useful content, a clear username, real audience acquisition, and analytics.
When Should You Keep the Channel Private?
Private is the better fit when restricted access is part of the value proposition.
Examples:
- · Paid content;
- · Customer-only materials;
- · Internal company updates;
- · Closed programs;
- · Partner information;
- · Manually approved communities.
In those cases, lack of public search visibility is not necessarily a disadvantage.
Why Is There No “Public” Button?
Check the most common reasons.
You Are Not the Owner
Administrators may manage content, but channel-type changes require ownership.
You Are Using the Native iPhone App
Current official documentation lists Android, desktop, and web for type changes.
You Do Not Have Digital ID
The standard user route requires it.
You Hit the Public-Channel Limit
If you already own five public channels under the combined standard limit, reduce the number first.
Your MAX Client Is Outdated
Update MAX and reopen channel settings.
Why Can’t You Save the Public Username?
The most common reason is that the username is already taken.
Try:
- · A more specific name;
- · Brand + topic;
- · A shorter unique variation;
- · Another readable combination.
Do not use another company’s identity.
Why Is the Channel Not Showing in Search After Going Public?
If you just changed the type:
- Confirm the channel still shows Public.
- Verify the username.
- Open the public URL.
- Check the channel name and description.
- Give the system time to refresh visibility.
For discovery optimization, see how to appear in MAX search.
Why Does the Old Link Stop Working After Going Private?
Because the public username is released.
MAX does not promise that the old public URL will redirect to the private channel.
Use the current invite link after the change.
If another user claims the released username, old marketing assets may begin leading somewhere else, which is why external links should be updated quickly.
Do QR Codes Need to Be Replaced After a Type Change?
Yes, if the QR code contains the old URL.
After the address changes:
- · Generate a new QR code;
- · Replace it on your website;
- · Update email flows;
- · Replace printed materials when possible;
- · Check pinned posts and automated funnels.

The Main Point
You no longer need to create a completely new MAX channel just because you want to change its visibility.
Private → public:
owner → Digital ID / business verification → settings or @business_channel_bot → Public → available username → new public link.
Public → private:
owner → settings → Private → public username is released → invite link → optional join requests.
The biggest risk is in the second direction: MAX does not reserve the public username for a private channel. If that username is important to the brand, switch only when the benefits of private access are worth that risk.
If you are still choosing the right model, use MAX channels. If the goal is growth after going public, continue with how to promote a MAX channel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a private MAX channel public?
Yes. Current MAX allows the owner to change the type of an existing channel without creating a new one. Through settings, this is available on Android, desktop, and web when Digital ID exists and the public-channel limit has space.
How do I convert a private MAX channel to public?
Open the channel → avatar → settings → Channel type and link → Public, confirm, choose an available username, and save. If Digital ID is missing, MAX will ask you to create it first.
Do I need Digital ID to make a MAX channel public?
For the standard settings route, yes. An alternative route is available to eligible verified organizations, sole proprietors, and self-employed profiles through @business_channel_bot.
Can I make a MAX channel public on iPhone?
Current official type-change documentation lists Android, desktop, and web. If the native iOS app does not show the control, use MAX web; Digital ID itself is created in the mobile app.
Do subscribers stay after switching to public?
For the business conversion flow, official MAX explicitly confirms that subscribers remain in the channel. The existing channel changes type rather than being replaced by a separate channel.
Do posts stay after converting a private MAX channel to public?
Official MAX for Business confirms that publications remain during the conversion, so there is no need to manually rebuild the post archive.
What happens to join requests after going public?
They are no longer needed because any user can directly subscribe to a public channel.
Can I make a public MAX channel private?
Yes. The owner can make any public channel private, including A+ and business channels, through Channel type and link.
What happens to the username when a public channel becomes private?
The public username is released and can be claimed by another MAX user. The private channel has no public username and uses an invite link.
Can I restore the old username later?
Only if it is still available. MAX does not reserve the old public username after the channel becomes private.
Can I make an A+ MAX channel private?
Yes. MAX allows an A+ channel to become private. Its old public username is released, and going public again requires choosing an available channel_{your_username} username.
Does a private MAX channel disappear from search?
For non-subscribers, private channels are not discoverable through MAX search. Access is based on an invite link.
Can I enable join requests after making the channel private?
Yes. Enable Join requests under Channel type and link. New users will then need approval from the owner or an administrator.
How many private MAX channels can I have?
MAX documentation says the number of private channels is unlimited.
Why can’t I make my private MAX channel public?
Check that you are the owner, are using Android/desktop/web, have Digital ID, and own fewer than five public channels under the combined standard limit. For business conversion, also check profile verification and the relevant public-channel limit.
